2 – Water Water everywhere, not a drop to drink

"Happy to be part of shaping the future." "It's the Way of The Future." That is how the participants summed up another meetup organized as part of Kaggle Days, a non-profit event for data science enthusiasts who want to grow and compete for prizes under the watchful eye of top Kaggle mentors and grandmasters. The second meetup in New Delhi is behind us. Three hundred participants, more than one hundred teams, and only three invitations to the finals in Barcelona mean that the excitement could not be lacking.

Introduction

Kaggle Days Championships is a series of 12 non-profit events that unite the data science community to network, learn and solve real-world challenges. Each meetup, held since November 2011, is an opportunity for participants to listen to motivating and substantive talks and test their skills in practice, competing for a spot in the offline grand finals.

We already know the three winning teams that will meet in Barcelona to take on the challenge, become Kaggle Days champions, and win great prizes and goodies from Kaggle Days and Z by HP.

Water, water everywhere, not a drop to drink! New Delhi 2021

Can data science support the fight against global water scarcity? Yes, and participants at the event in New Delhi had the opportunity to prove it. Each Kaggle Days meetup addresses current issues and challenges facing people and the planet. Knowing that some 2.2 billion people worldwide do not have access to safe, clean water, and a similar number of people use health facilities that lack essential water services, this theme became the focus of our event in December 2021.

The research proves that assessing the quality of the water we consume daily can be the first step toward sanitizing the world’s water. That’s why 121 teams from 60 countries entering the qualifying task in New Delhi attempted to train a machine learning model on water quality data for further prediction. The organized competition in New Delhi received an extremely friendly reception from both beginners and experienced participants. The task proved not so tricky that novices had no chance to tackle it but also not so easy that it did not challenge the Kaggle Days grandmasters themselves. As always, when competing at our meetups, there was no shortage of fascinating solutions and out-of-the-box thinking that fueled the second Kaggle Days meetup.

Winning teams

A thrilling meeting in New Delhi helped determine the three winning teams that received an invitation to the 2022 Championship finals in Barcelona. The 337 participants had 4 hours to solve the problem. The fight was fierce until the last moments, but only the three best teams could be awarded. Here they are.

First place: the GegenPressing team from India (composition: Rajneesh Tiwari, Sahil Verma, Nikhil Mishra, Ayushman Buragohain), which maintained its position as the leader on the leaderboard.

Second place: the Saber team from China (a one-person team from Shanghai), which moved up three positions on the overall leaderboard.

Third place: re:wodori team from Japan (composition: Okoshi Takumi, Yuki Nakatsuka, Shotaro Ishihara, Kaeru-Nantoka, ), which moved up one position on the leaderboard.

The victorious teams got a ticket to Barcelona for a chance to compete in the world championship!

There was no shortage of engaging performances and lectures in New Delhi.

Meetups organized as part of Kaggle Days are enduringly famous for the opportunity to test their skills and win attractive prizes. In addition, each event is an opportunity to listen to interesting speeches, which were also not lacking in New Dehli.

The December 2021 Kaggle Days event featured, among others, Abhishek Thakur, the world’s first quadruple Kaggle Grandmaster, who has over 70,000 subscribers on his YouTube channel, with whom he shares his knowledge on machine learning, deep learning, and data science.

During the lecture, Abishek shared his proven ways to solve some of the technical problems of his work. There was also no shortage of topics related to the industry and the work environment. The lecture received a particularly enthusiastic reception from beginners, who were able to see how to get started in Data Science and how people who are specialists in this field deal with numerous professional challenges. In addition, among the speakers, we had the honor of hosting:

Maria Parysz, Kaggle Days creator, CEO of LogicAI

Julia Elliott, Kaggle interim CEO

Wilton Pangoria, Z by HP representative

Event Summary
The guest speakers received a lot of attention from the participants and thus made the Q&A session very dynamic. The coordinators even had to interrupt this part of the event to conduct the competition! Thank you to all participants for such great involvement. It’s a great feeling that Kaggle Days attracts such great Data Science enthusiasts.

There’s everything about the event from us. You can take our word for it that Kaggle Days is a truly unique and exciting initiative, or check out what its participants had to say about the event:
